Haitian Disaster Relief
Update on the Christian & Missionary Alliance Response to the Earthquake Disaster in Haiti
It is estimated that there are over 150 churches in Haiti that are part of the Alliance family, plus several schools and orphanages. Many of these have been planted by Alliance pastors in our Haitian churches in the United States, as well as by others burdened for this island, such as Dr. Genius Wells in the Bahamas and the Puerto Rico District. Because of the poverty of the country, these churches are often dependent on the giving of their sponsoring churches in America for not only leadership training, but basic provisions.
There was a conference call yesterday of various leaders at the National Office of the C&MA including Emmanuel Seide of the Haitian Association. The concern was strong, and the response was clear. The C&MA sees the need to provide immediate disaster relief as well as assist in the long-term rebuilding effort. CAMA Services will head up the relief effort, and a fund has been set up to receive gifts from our churches. They will be strategically cooperating with other relief organizations already in Haiti.
All gifts received will be used for the needs of the families, friends, pastors, and churches of our fellow pastors and church members in our districts. It might be to help with funerals, or to re-build homes and churches, or to provide essentials where other relief efforts fall short. There will be short and long term needs, and the need to organize construction trips. Disbursement will be decided by a committee of Haitian Association and district leaders.
Giving to CAMA Services, with a balance of Word and deed, or to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund of the Metro/Southeastern District, will be used wisely and strategically. We ask that you prayerfully consider giving to this important relief effort.
